Lawn Care
Lawn Mowing / Trimming
Proper mowing is perhaps the single most important cultural practice to ensuring a healthy, beautiful lawn. Lawns should be cut to 3 – 3 ½” in height. Without the proper surface area of green leaf the grass cannot carry on photosynthesis necessary to convert energy to food. By leaving the grass longer it also shades the soil and helps keep the soil temperature cooler.
This is important since the common varieties of turf grass in the Northeast include bluegrass, fescues and ryegrass. All three are referred to as cool season grasses. Crabgrass, the dreaded pest of the lawn is a warm season grass. So when the grass is cut too short the soil heats up quicker and you set up an environment that favors the growing of crabgrass

- PH Amendment Using Granulated Lime as Needed
- Winterizer – This provides your lawn with the nutrients it will need to survive in the coming winter months
As lawns age or sustain heavy use from play, sports activities, pets, vehicle traffic and parking, soil compaction can result. Aerating is the process by which small holes are cut in the lawn and the resulting plugs are removed.
Core Aeration Can Benefit Your Lawn By:
- Increasing the activity of soil microorganisms that decompose thatch.
- Increasing water, nutrient and oxygen movement into the soil
- Improving rooting
- Enhancing infiltration of rainfall or irrigation
- Helping prevent fertilizer and pesticide run-off from overly compacted areas.
Grubs have become an increasing problem on the island. Grubs feed on the root systems of your lawn, and can and will destroy an entire lawn if not caught early. Grub Control is essential to maintaining a healthy and beautiful lawn.
Thatch is what we call the layer of dying and dead leaves, stems, and roots that develops between the top of your green lawn and the soil surface. All lawns will develop some thatch over time, some much quicker than others. It is important to remove thatch yearly to promote a healthy lawn.
Done once a year in late summer, the process of Overseeding is an important component in ensuring a lush, healthy lawn. Grass like any crop, must be regularly planted to ensure even and dense coverage. Weak and thinning lawns are vulnerable to opportunistic weeds, which, will pop up wherever there is space for them to grow. Over time, lawns may fall subject to everyday stresses as well, such as compaction, drought or pests. Each year, small patches of your lawn may weaken or even die back; Overseeding is an excellent all-natural way to prevent future issues while simultaneously boosting the overall health and vigor of your lawn.
We at Atlantic Landscaping Inc. feel that Nantucket is a very special place, with a unique environment and eco-system. Over the years there has been more and more publicity about the effects of chemical fertilizers and their effects on lawns and plants, as well as their effect on the drinking water and surrounding eco-system (for example. Eel grass). We feel that introducing a completely organic way of fertilizing lawns and plants will allow the property owners on Nantucket the ability to have both a beautiful and healthy property, while at the same time helping to maintain a healthy eco-system and cleaner drinking water.

Hedge Trimming
Summer Maintenance
On Nantucket, Privet Hedges not only provide privacy from neighbors and on lookers but also, also add structural interest and provide a beautiful backdrop for abundant gardens. Despite common belief, Privet is a fairly low maintenance plant. They do not require much fertilizer or water and can withstand full sun and windy conditions. However, to be kept in tight formation, they require 2 to 3 light trimmings a year. Our experienced crews have been trained to spot pest and disease issues and can take care of your hedges from cut to cleanup. They work quickly and take great pride in the quality of their work.
Fall Pruning
In the fall, it is best to do preventative pruning of your privet hedges to promote good air circulation and new growth. Each year, a small amount of branches will die, get sick or simply will overgrow. By thinning or dead wooding these hedges annually, you will ensure years of lush, dense growth. In addition, we can reshape or “renovate” your privet hedges during this fall visit if you feel that they have grown too wide or too wild. Call or email us for a quote and get your hedges in great shape this year.
